How many words per day?

Postby Herr Arnulfe » Sat Mar 03, 2012 2:55 pm

I'm curious to know how fast other people write. I consider 1,000 words to be a pretty successful 8-10 hour day of writing. I can write 1,500 words/day if I'm "in the zone". For anything above that, I'm compromising quality. If the subject matter is difficult, it's not unusual for me to spend a day agonizing over 300 words.

I can write all day when in the right mood and tanked on coffee, as my 2400 words on Blood Thralls shows. Though my writing skills are pretty poor and only shines after others have given it a proof-read (such as the good-wife and the LF team). On a bad day, well its a struggle just to open the lap-top and not just stare at the screen.

1000 words for 8-10hrs seems reasonable, although there is often more than words in writting for WFRP ofc, pictures, profiles and maps can often take days in themselves. Although like Thor said I can find myself stare at the screen blankley, which I find writting paper sometimes cures. There is something about a computer screen that can stem creativity at times.

Not to mention research! Sifting through hundreds of pages of army books, novels and fan publications for relevant snippets can make writing for WFRP really slow, plus factor in RW history research. Including research time, my average writing output is probably more like 500 words/day.

When writing, I usually spend 1 hour lying down and organizing my thoughts for every 2-3 hours at the computer. :)

If everyone had your patience, perseverance and constructive attitude, a lot more fan material would get finished.

I have to admit that when I have had the time to write for days at a time, I have got up to 5000 words a day. However that is background stuff or fluff. Where you have to write rules or do maps, then the word rate drops off completely. I managed to do three maps in two days once, drawn by hand. Everything is relative. Do you count the research, cross checking, maps, emails on here, or time spent just thinking about it, into the time spent. If you do then the word count per day will probably drop below a hundred if you factor in all those different problems.
At the moment Grunburg stands at around 75,000 words give or take, which took me roughly six months to write. That works out at 400 words a day every day for those six months. That does not even include the maps. Obviously I did not work on it every day, so the word count for those days when I did work on it, would have been that much higher.

I wouldn't include maps or project emails in the wordcount. Research should technically count as writing time, but paid freelance gigs don't pay extra for research time, so let's ignore it for these purposes too. Assume a full day of writing from a rough, researched outline, with just some occasional fact-checking in between.

Of course, most fan-creators only squeeze in time between other jobs; often in much smaller blocks than 8 hours. It can be difficult to build momentum and sustain rhythm when you're not writing 9-5, five days a week.

Very true, I have to go think through various storylines once a day if I'm not writting just to keep any kind of momentum. Or like you say things can slip away. Then I do have a love / hate relationship with writting. :P

Well, the writing process should be painful IMO. It's like the old adage except in reverse, "if it feels good, you're probably doing it wrong". The reward comes later when others appreciate the fruits of your suffering. :) I only know a handful of writers who actually feel fulfilled by the writing process itself, and they're all fiction writers.

My standard these days - after over two years of freelancing experience for FFG - wavers between 2 and 4 thousand words a day, with more if I really push it. I tend to be more productive with rules than background - the structure and format of the kind of rules sections I've worked on means that it breaks down into manageable blocks more easily. Most of my writing has been done on weekends - I leave weekday nights free for relaxing and socialising - so a weeks' work is normally packed into two long days.

I've found it helps a lot to take regular breaks, which in turn is helped by planning properly and dividing your work into small chunks (so that you can reach the end of a section, take a break, and then return fresh for a new section). Ideally, when you take a break, take a break from your entire work area - go into a different room to eat, go for a short walk to stretch your legs (nothing worse than your legs going to sleep when you've been writing for hours non-stop) or whatever... just as long as you go somewhere else for a little while.
